This proposal (A-15) raises many workers to $15/hour by 2024, but it still creates multiple classes of work and wages. Farmworkers are only guaranteed a minimum wage of $12.50/hour by 2024, but after that, the proposal allows for a small committee to pause the increases if “necessary,” potentially excluding farmworkers from a $15 minimum wage. Seasonal and small business employees get to $15/hour in 2029 and tipped workers are capped at $5.13 by 2024.
We want to support this proposed bill because we know that New Jersey workers need at least a $15 minimum wage. However, it is disappointing that there are workers who will have to wait more than 5 years to get to a $15 minimum wage and that farmworkers, a critical workforce in this state, are not even guaranteed a $15 minimum wage. This proposal, while beneficial to most of New Jersey’s workforce, specifically carves out farmworkers to a greater extent and allows for the potential creation of a subclass of workers.
