One of CATA’s primary areas of work is assisting and supporting workers facing labor abuse—whether it’s when an employer doesn’t pay correct wages, discriminates against someone, or creates unsafe working conditions that endanger health. We guide workers through their options for addressing these issues and, once they decide on a course of action, we provide support along the often challenging journey to justice.
Many times, this journey can be long and difficult—so much so that many decide to abandon the case in favor of moving on and trying to leave the injustice and pain behind. But there are also those who persist, keeping the fight alive, who communicate well, remain patient, and hold on to their faith in justice.
Here are some of the inspiring stories of workers who achieved justice in 2024:
J.H.’s Case
J.H.’s case began about three years ago when the company he worked for was sold. During the transition, he lost his accumulated vacation time, which he hadn’t yet taken. Even though the legal argument was complex (since the law doesn’t guarantee vacation time for workers), persistence paid off, and he was able to recover his lost week’s pay!
Workers of CW
A group of workers from this glass factory came to CATA at the end of 2020, concerned about the behavior of a supervisor, unsafe working conditions, and the complete lack of COVID protections. The group met with the company owner in 2021, but soon after, they were fired. After a three-year battle, they signed a resolution this year, finally achieving the justice they sought.
Farmworkers of K.J
Farmworkers from this farm reached out to CATA to discuss the high recruitment fees they had been paying to work in New Jersey under an H-2A visa. They were initially uncertain about speaking directly to their employer, but eventually decided to open a dialogue, which led to a positive response. CATA supported them with translation during these discussions, but the success was ultimately due to the courage these workers showed in advocating for themselves.
These are just a few examples of what can be achieved when workers decide to face their challenges head-on. CATA is here to advise and support them every step of the way.
